Hội Phóng viên không biên giới cực lực lên án việc công an câu lưu và gây hấn ông Ben Stocking, trưởng phòng thông tấn Associated Press tại Hà Nội, trong khi ông đang theo dõi một cuộc biểu tình của giáo dân Việt Nam. Sự cố được thu hình này youtube.com cho thấy rõ ràng là công an trước hết trục xuất ông khỏi nơi cuộc biểu tình bất bạo động đang xảy ra. Ông Stocking cho biết là họ tịch thu máy chụp ảnh của ông và khi ông đòi lại thì bị công an dùng máy này đánh vào đầu và bị họ đấm vào mặt. Ông bị tạm giữ tại đồn công an trong hai tiếng rưỡi đồng hồ và vết thương trên đầu ông phải cần đến bốn mũi khâu sau khi ông được thả. Hãng thông tấn Associated Press đã yêu cầu nhà chức trách Việt Nam phải xin lỗi và hòan trả lại máy hình cho ông Stocking.

Nhà chức trách Việt Nam phủ nhận việc hành hung một phóng viên của Thông tấn Associated Press trong lúc ông theo dõi một buổi cầu nguyện công giáo tại quốc gia cộng sản này.
Việc phủ nhận này được công bố một ngày sau khi ông Ben Stocking, trưởng văn phòng Associated Press tại Hà Nội được thả ra sau khỏang 2 tiếng rưỡi bị công an tạm giữ và phải khâu 4 múi chỉ ở một vết thương phía sau đầu. Máy chụp ảnh của ông bị công an tịch thâu.
Phát ngôn nhân Bộ Ngọai giao Lê Dung cho biết qua một tuyên bố trên trạm của Bộ rằng ông "Stocking vi phạm luật Việt Nam khi chủ ý ghi hình ở một nơi cấm chụp".
Cũng theo tuyên bố này "Ông Ben Stocking không hề bị lực luợng an ninh Việt Nam hành hung".

Officials in Vietnam deny beating AP reporter
BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- Vietnamese officials have denied beating an Associated Press reporter in Vietnam while he covered a Catholic prayer vigil in the communist country.
The denial comes a day after Ben Stocking, the Hanoi bureau chief for The Associated Press, was released from police custody after about 2 1/2 hours and required four stitches on the back of his head. His camera was confiscated by police.
Vietnam's foreign ministry spokesman Le Dung posted a statement Saturday on the ministry's web site that said, "Stocking broke the Vietnamese law by deliberately taking pictures at a place where taking pictures was not allowed."
"There was no beating of Mr. Ben Stocking by the Vietnamese security force," the statement said.

AP reporter arrested and beaten by police
Reporters Without Borders condemns the arrest and mistreatment of Associated Press Hanoi bureau chief Ben Stocking by police while he was covering a peaceful demonstration by Vietnamese Catholics today in Hanoi. A video of his arrest http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=VTnukD8uYW4 clearly shows police officers forcing him to leave the site of the demonstration. Stocking said the police took his camera and, when he asked for it back, hit him on the head with it and punched him in the face. He spent two and a half hours in a police station and need four stitches to his head afterwards. The Associated Press has asked the Vietnamese authorities to apologise and return Stocking's camera.
Un correspondant d'Associated Press interpellé et frappé par des policiers
Reporters sans frontières dénonce vivement l'interpellation et l'agression par des policiers de Ben Stocking, le chef du bureau de l'agence Associated Press à Hanoi, alors qu'il tentait de couvrir une manifestation de catholiques vietnamiens. La vidéo de l'interpellation http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=VTnukD8uYW4 montre clairement que des policiers l'ont tout d'abord contraint de quitter les lieux de la manifestation pacifique, puis l'ont frappé avec un appareil photo. Ben Stocking a passé deux heures et demie au commissariat et a reçu quatre points de suture à la tête.
Associated Press a demandé des excuses aux autorités vietnamiennes suite à cet incident. L'agence a évidemment demandé que l'appareil photo de Ben Stocking lui soit restitué.
